There is nothing worse than crashing out on national television over a problem you entirely manufactured yourself. But that is exactly what multi-platinum rapper 2 Chainz did on the latest episode of Kirk Franklinâs Den of Kings podcast. Armed with a massive ego and zero research, 2 Chainz decided to aggressively confront viral food critic Keith Lee for supposedly trashing his Atlanta establishment, Esco Restaurant & Tapas.
The punchline? Keith Lee had never actually set foot in or reviewed 2 Chainzâs restaurant.
In a masterclass of absolute embarrassment, 2 Chainz spent the first half of the interaction trapping himself in a lie. When he tried to subtly press Lee about his âbad review,â Lee looked him dead in the eye and asked a simple question: âWhich restaurant is yours?â Panicking because he didnât actually know who reviewed his food, 2 Chainz tried to stutter out an escape, muttering, âIt donât matter,â before Kirk Franklin forced him to admit the name Esco.
The internet instantly fact-checked the rapper: the scathing 1.8/10 review 2 Chainz was crying about actually came from Mr. ChimeTime, a completely different Black food content creator. 2 Chainz was quite literally picking a fight with the wrong man.
The Bait-and-Switch: The Review He Begged For
But 2 Chainz just couldnât leave well enough alone. Instead of laughing off the mix-up, he pivoted to aggressively defending celebrity entitlement, proudly declaring that regular paying customers simply do not deserve the same luxury as him.
That elitist attitude was the exact trigger Keith Lee needed to drop the ultimate hammer. 2 Chainz wanted to talk about reviews? Keith Lee gave him an unfiltered, real-time critique of celebrity restaurant culture right then and there.
Without a single second of hesitation, Lee exposed the systemic, fraudulent favoritism polluting celebrity-owned spots like Esco. Lee detailed his exact operational strategy: he purposefully sends his mom and his wife into establishments completely unannounced to see how normal Black consumers are actually treated.
And the verdict was damning. Lee revealed that his mother has been left stranded, struggling to get basic service at these highly praised spots. But the second the restaurant staff realizes Keith Lee is in the building, the red carpet is rolled out and a table is âmagicallyâ ready right away.
The Verdict: A Masterclass in Deplatforming Entitlement
2 Chainz entered that room trying to bully an honest creator for a review that didnât exist, and left looking childish, pretentious, and wildly out of touch. He exposed his own restaurantâs business model: if you arenât famous, your hard-earned money isnât worth standard customer service.
The backlash was so severe that 2 Chainz had to tuck his tail and issue a public apology on November 3, claiming âwhat I said and what I meant were two different things.â
Nice try, Tity Boi. But Keith Lee already said what the rest of us were thinking: if your kitchen can only serve good food and respect when a celebrity walks in, you shouldnât be running a restaurant at all.
THE FOOD?
The live, on-the-spot verdict was damning. Lee revealed the exact terrible service ordinary people face while celebrities get the red carpet:
âIf you go in, youâre going to get a completely different experience than if my mama go in or my wife go in... because theyâre not who other people think they are,â Lee countered sharply. âSpecifically, the experience was completely different once my face was shown. I send my mother-in-law to 10 different restaurants, she couldnât eat nowhere. She couldnât get no food, she couldnât get no service, she couldnât get no experience at all. I go in, table ready right now.â
